Neon, Not Just Another Sign
Dylan J. Steinmetz
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor
Many Saturday Mornings of my childhood were spent in my garage watching my father create neon signs. As a child, I honored this art simply because I knew that it was unique. Upon revisiting these memories I have realized that my respect for my father's art has become deeply-founded in me. My reflections have taken me from simply admiring my father's handiwork to an understanding of his efforts and an honor for his thankless labors. In this essay, I pass through my memories of watching my father, recalling images and feelings. I look deeper into these experiences in order to discover the source of my respect for this art. By reflecting on a single aspect of my life, I have begun to learn a lesson on appreciation. Not only an appreciation for my fathers efforts or for the quality of his work, but an appreciation for the commonplace.
