The Allocation of Visual Attention During Emotional Expression
Samuel S. Phillips
Dr. Terry Palmer, Faculty Mentor
The purpose of this research is to develop a new paradigm by which the allocation of visual attention during the observation of different emotional states may be examined. Current research in the field has shown that the neural processing of emotional faces requires attention. The current study examines how attention is allocated to different regions of the face during the observation of different emotional states. This will be examined by stereoscopic presentation of a face and a visual mask. The mask will consist of a moving horizontal grating to take advantage of the Cheshire cat effect. Through this method, only the most salient features of the face will come through the mask, thus demonstrating where attention is being allocated, showing both which features and which side of the face are important for processing.
