The Price of Poverty: The Lived Experience of Mental Illness
Cheri R. Smith
Ms. Rebecca P. McClanahan, Faculty Mentor
This case study was conducted with the intent of understanding the lived experience of mental illness, while interacting with a woman living with a serious and persistent mental illness involved in a psychosocial rehabilitation program. Nursing diagnoses, outcomes, and interventions were used from the standardized nursing language of North American Nursing Diagnosis Association, the Nursing Outcomes Classification taxonomy, and the Nursing Intervention Classification taxonomy. The care plan that resulted was put together over a two-month period and consisted of five nurse-client interactions. The emergent themes that arose during interactions included “poverty of speech,” the abilities and the inabilities of mental illness, and reconnecting with family. The emergent themes of caring nursing include acceptance, presence, advocacy, and positive reinforcement.
