Using Best Practice Teaching Strategies for Children with Asperger's Syndrome

Asperger's Syndrome, a high functioning form of autism, presents many challenges in the general classroom. The purpose of this research was to discover how best practice techniques can help a child with Asperger's Syndrome reach his or her intellectual and social potential. To uncover this information, I worked with a 1st grade teacher to modify lesson plans to reflect best practice teaching strategies for a student with Asperger’s Syndrome. These modifications included both teaching and learning strategies and were recorded in an observation journal. Symptoms and implications of Asperger’s Syndrome are discussed as are the results of the lesson modification.
