The Effect that the Presence of a Union in a Firm Will Have on an Individual’s Job Search

There is a significant amount of research which examines the factors that may influence an individual’s job search. Through a thorough literature review, I have examined the factors which influence an individual’s job search, and the factors which influence the outcome of a union certification election. The current research identifies three categories of influences which may impact a person’s job search: job characteristics, personal characteristics, and firm characteristics. The presence of a labor union in a firm is hypothesized to be a potentially influential firm characteristic. A model has been proposed which shows how the presence of a labor union in a firm may influence an individual’s job search. The model illustrates the influence that the presence of a labor union in a firm may have relative to the job search factors that have been previously identified in the literature.
