Automated Analysis of Bat Echolocation Calls

Field biologists have used ultrasonic detectors to perform acoustic surveys of bats in their natural environment for a number of years. One popular technology used is the Anabat system and the Analook analysis software. The acoustic data recorded by Anabat is not rich in information about call harmonics, and using the data for identification of the species of bat recorded has had varying degrees of success. In order to facilitate the rigorous analysis of different identification techniques, researchers have expressed a need for an automated data extraction and analysis tool with an integrated and systematic approach to reproducible research. We have developed an alternative framework for data visualization and manipulation that is cross-platform and open source. This tool is extensible and provides a cohesive platform for researchers to explore identification techniques and manage data in the form of call libraries.
