Comparison of EMG Activity of Triceps Surae During Calf Raise Variations in College Students

The present study tested whether lateral and medial hip rotation affected electromyographic activation of triceps surae during calf raises. Twenty women and eleven men volunteered (20.32±0.94 years). During the first session a 10-RM for calf raises was determined with feet oriented in anatomical position. During the second session electrodes were placed on the lateral gastrocnemius, medial gastrocnemius, and soleus. Subjects performed a maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) in anatomical position. They then performed three sets of 10 calf raises at 80% of their 10-RM in each of the three positions: anatomical position, lateral hip rotation, and medial hip rotation. Average integrated EMG data was calculated and normalized to the subject’s integrated MVC. Interclass correlations were greater than 0.96 on all repetitions. Muscle activation patterns did not differ in anatomical, medially rotated, and laterally rotated positions. Contrary to weight room lore, these lifting variations do not affect these muscles differently.
