Didjeridu: A Commodity of Tradition

The didjeridu is an instrument native to Australia which is used by Aborininal clans to play unique, sacred songs and secular music. In this presentation, features of the instrument’s history and musical characteristics will be introduced. First, the construction materials and process used to make a didjeridu will be examined along with a variety of techniques used to create various sounds on the didjeridu. The current state of the didjeridu in society will also be discussed as well as its level of popularity throughout the world. An investigation of the motives behind the acceptance of didjeridu playing in other countries and determining why the didjeridu became popular outside its original context will be reviewed. A personal interpretation of the didjeridu in performance will also be included. This presentation aims to elevate awareness of the didjeridu in traditional and contemporary styles.
