Life is Not a Beach: The Lived Experience of Mental Illness
Jennifer A. McDonnell
Ms. Rebecca P. McClanahan, Faculty Mentor
This case study was conducted for the purpose of understanding the unique lived experience of mental illness within a psychosocial rehabilitation program while working with a person with bipolar disorder. Nursing diagnoses, outcomes, and interventions were selected from the standardized nursing language of the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association, the Nursing Outcomes Classification taxonomy, and the Nursing Intervention Classification taxonomy. A nursing care plan was developed and then implemented during the six student-client interactions spanning two months of the semester. Emergent themes that arose from the experience were weight, knowledge about medication, anger, and anxiety. Caring themes included anxiety reduction, anger management, health teaching, encouragement, and active listening.
