Assessing Pragmatics: Testing the Validity and Reliability of a Pragmatic Checklist
Jenna M. Buckner
Dr. Paula Cochran, Faculty Mentor
The purpose of this study was to verify the validity and reliability of a locally developed checklist for assessing pragmatic language in children. The checklist developed and used in Truman State University’s Speech and Hearing Clinic is organized around Grice’s Cooperative Principles of conversation. Eleven graduate students used the checklist to rate videotaped language samples from three children previously identified as having 1) normal language, 2) a mild speech problem, and 3) a pragmatic language disorder. Results suggest that Truman’s Checklist may help clinicians identify clients who need more assessment or intervention in the area of pragmatics.
