The Effect of Providing a Verbal Prompt that Explains Iconicity on Learning Sign Language
Adrienne R. Johnson
Dr. Janet Gooch, Faculty Mentor
The purpose of this study was to determine whether providing a verbal prompt that directly states the iconic relationship of a sign to its meaning enhances memory of the sign. Two groups of 10 participants were taught 20 signs, 10 high in iconicity and 10 low in iconicity. Group I was only provided the English translation of the signs. Group II learned the signs accompanied by a statement of iconicity. All other teaching procedures remained constant. A test over the 20 signs determined whether providing a verbal prompt explaining the iconic relationship of a sign facilitates memory of the sign.
