Kirksville R-III School District Title IV Drug and Violence Needs Assessment

The purpose of this study was to identify existing needs in the school system on issues such as substance abuse, school safety, personal/ mental healthcare, and efficiency of current substance abuse prevention programming. Rural youth are reported to have high risk for substance abuse (National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, 2000). Voluntary anonymous written surveys were distributed during fall 2003 at the Primary, Ray Miller, Middle School, and High schools to students, faculty, staff, administrators, parents, and community members. Total surveys returned were 1135. 70% of respondents were students and 20% were parents. The majority of respondents felt students received enough information regarding the effects of drug use. Many students felt prevention education was repetitive and not an effective deterrent. Education during early school years was viewed more highly effective. Each group surveyed recognized bullying as a problem. A majority of respondents requested tips on anger and stress management.
