Stressful Life Events in Alternative Education Students: A Literature Review
Laura E. Kresl
Dr. Carol Cox, Faculty Mentor
Adolescence is a stressful time because of puberty, friendships, relationships, and their attempt to gain independence from adults. Experiencing continual or mounting stressful life events can lead to ever-increasing delinquency and poor academic performance among adolescents. Stress events and life stress have been studied in regular education students, learning disabled students, and multi-ethnic and minority students. Those students with behavioral disorders and in alternative education programs, however, have been largely ignored. Although alternative high schools offer a supportive, non-traditional educational setting for these ‘at-risk’ students (e.g. delinquent, truant, expelled), there is a huge gap in the literature describing the sources of stress for this under-studied group. From this literature review, it is recommended that sources of stress in this population be further studied.
