The purposes of this study were to evaluate the accuracy of predicting bench press strength from sub-maximal repetitions and to determine the accuracy of prediction on trained individual. Fifty, untrained college males where tested for the amount of weight with which they could perform 7-10 repetitions to muscular fatigue. The high correlation between 7-10 RM and the 1RM (r =.98) allowed the development for an accurate prediction equation (SEE = 4.1kg). The prediction equation was applied to a group following twelve week of resistance training. The cross-validation was not significantly different from the original group in age, height, weight or 1RM but used a significantly higher 7-10RM weight. The high cross-validation correlation (r =.91) and the non-significant difference between predicted and actual indicated that a single equation could be used to predict trained or untrained strength status.
