The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of various warm down protocols following intense maximal exercise on the removal of blood lactate in healthy college age males. All subjects completed three phases. The first phase was a VO2 max test on a cycle ergometer. Session two included a wingate test followed by three minutes of rest before performing one of two possible recovery protocols. One recovery protocol required the participant to cycle at 50% of his predetermined VO2 max for 42 minutes. The other recovery protocol required each participant to alternate 3 minutes of cycling at 50% of his predetermined VO2 max with 3 minutes of rest for 42 minutes. Blood lactate levels and heart rates were taken at specific intervals during the warm down period following maximal exercise. Results show that lactate tends to be removed more efficiently with continuous activity after a maximal effort than with intermittent activity.
