A Turtle Community on a Small Northeast Missouri Marsh

Six species of turtles are known to inhabit Rose Pond, northeast Missouri. These are the Yellow Mud turtle, the Blandings turtle, the Midland Painted turtle, the Redear turtle, the common snapping turtle, and the spiny softshell turtle. Turtle populations will be studied at Rose pond in late spring/summer of 2004. This report was prompted by the initial survey in 1981 that was summarized to give a snapshot of the turtle community at that time. Unreported data from nearly 7 years of trapping is available on this site and will be used to provide the basis for expected population counts at Rose pond. Actual data collected will allow us to determine how the populations of these species of turtles are faring and the changes in populations that have occurred within the last 23 years.
