The Greener Side of Magruder Hall: A Look Inside the Greenhouse

The south side of Magruder Hall is the future location of the University Greenhouse. Housing a collection of plants for research and teaching, the current greenhouse holds over 1,000 plants representing 70 different species, including large in-ground cacti and agaves. By early summer, when the new greenhouse becomes operational, many of the plants will be moved to their new location, which includes three climate-controlled rooms and an in-ground planting space. A moving and management plan is being developed to help guide the process. Inventory will be taken and only 2 – 3 individuals of each species will be transported to the new greenhouse, allowing space for new species, and thus increasing overall diversity. The remaining plants will be sold to the public in a spring sale. A website to include pictures and descriptions of species will be created to educate students and faculty about the plants in the greenhouse.
