Discussion of a Northwestern Basket From the Wendell Cordel Collection
Kelly L. Belgeri
Dr. Sara Orel, Faculty Mentor
Wendell Cordel graduated from North Missouri State Teacher’s College in 1925. He then went on to teach in Alaska with his wife. During his years there he collected many native items, including the item being researched. It is a birch-bark basket collected from near the Kobuck River. It is a functional basket with minimal decoration. Discussion of this basket includes the date of manufacture, purpose and the cultural identity of those who produced it. The basket will be put on display in conjunction with Dr. Orel’s ART222: Non-Western Art class in Pickler Memorial Library during the last week of March.
