Pilot Study: The Use of CBT on Mathematics Anxiety
Kirah R. Jerome
Dr. Scott Alberts, Faculty Mentor
Mathematics anxiety has been shown to be negatively correlated with mathematics performance among targeted high risk students. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is used in this study as an intervention method to reduce mathematics anxiety and increase mathematics performance among developmental mathematics courses at a community college. No significant increases in performance were found, although numerical anxiety was reduced by CBT. Students demonstrating a decrease in test anxiety in the experimental section received higher grades, while those in the control section demonstrating a decrease in test anxiety received lower grades. Motivation was an overwhelming confounding variable; across all sections students with higher motivation were more likely to pass.
