Accuracy of Selected Anthropometric Dimensions to Predict 1-RM Bench Press in College Football Players

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity of selected anthropometric equations to estimate 1-RM bench press in college football players. Ten large players (weight = 254 ± 34 lbs) were measured for skeletal lengths, muscle circumferences, and subcutaneous skinfolds during the off-season conditioning period. Five prediction equations found in the literature included one developed on average college men (ACM), one on trained college men (TCM), one on highly trained high school male athletes (HAS), and two on college football players (FB1 and FB2). The ACM and HAS equations significantly underpredicted 1-RM bench press (-8.8 ± 11.0% and -5.9 ± 12.1%, respectively) while TCM significantly overpredicted 1-RM bench press (10.3 ± 14.5%). FB1 nonsignificantly overpredicted (1.5 ± 11.2%) while FB2 nonsignificantly underpredicted 1-RM bench press (-0.5 ± 11.8%). Anthropometric dimensions may provide acceptable estimation of 1-RM bench press when football-specific prediction equations are utilized.
