Traditional Forms, New Voices: Poetry Expressing Unique Religious Musical Practices

I propose an imaginative interdisciplinary study linking ethnomusicology, comparative religious and literary studies, and creative writing. This project will attempt to comment on a society's musical religious experience through the poetic voice of that particular culture. Specifically, my research will look at Adhan, the Islamic call to prayer, Aboriginal initiation ceremonies and Japanese classical gagaku music. After approaching these ceremonies in musical, religious and cultural contexts, I will write poems which follow models of poetry from those countries, expressing my understanding of the practice. The presentation will consist of an example of the music I was inspired by followed by a short explanation of the ceremony and my creative attempt to engage with these cultures on their own poetic terms.
