The Effects of Competition on the Activity Levels of Female Adolescents in Physical Education Class
Alicia S. Young♦
Dr. Carla Smith, Faculty Mentor

It has been suggested that one reason female obesity rates are on the rise is due to the lack of participation at an appropriate intensity level to affect cardiovascular health in physical education. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of competitive activities in physical education on females participation levels and enjoyment measures during physical education. During two units in an eighth grade class, students reported their heart rates using heart rate monitors and enjoyment levels with a self assessment survey. Each unit contained both competitive and non competitive activities. All students recorded their heart rates and level of enjoyment at specified times. Because of the small sample size, dependent t-tests will be conducted to determine differences in group means. It is expected that during competitive activities females, n= 6, will record lower heart rates and lower levels of enjoyment than during the non-competitive activities.
