Acrocorinth: Greek History in a Nutshell

“Acrocorinth was the ultimate fortress.” So said one scholar about the history of the Greek fortification. Indeed, Acrocorinth has stood as a defensive retreat for nearly 2500 years and has outlasted the invasions of the Romans, Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, Turks, and countless smaller groups. It has held the population of Corinth for long and short durations in times of need. It was also the home to three different religious houses at various times. Currently, though only the hardiest of tourists have the courage to make the strenuous climb to the top, those who dare are treated not only to one of the best views of the area, but also to a rare site that encompasses something from all eras of Greek history and culture.
