"Pouring Out the Past and Drinking New Life: The Lived Experience of Mental Illness"

This case study was conducted for the purpose of understanding the lived experience of mental illness, while working with a person with persistent mental illness and chronic substance dependence involved in a specialized program for persons with dual disorders. Nursing diagnoses, outcomes, and interventions were selected from the standardized nursing language of the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association, the Nursing Outcomes Classification taxonomy, and the Nursing Intervention Classification taxonomy. The resulting nursing care plan was implemented during six nurse-client interactions. The metaphor of “pouring out the past and drinking new life” was used to capture the essence of the lived experience of engaging in effective treatment for mental illness and substance abuse. The emergent themes that arose from these interactions were anxiety, sobriety, and self-maintenance of treatment regimen. Caring themes used by the nursing student included anxiety reduction, self-reflection, active listening, encouragement, and teaching.
