An Illustrated Memory
This project explores the recreation of childhood memories through a series of watercolor illustrations that emphasize nostalgia and personal reflection. Drawing from lived experiences, the work investigates how visual storytelling can translate specific moments from the past into cohesive, constructed scenes. Influenced by illustrators such as Helen Stephens, the project uses “memory mining” as a method for developing imagery rooted in observation, imagination, and composition. The final body of work consists of four watercolor illustrations, each depicting a distinct childhood memory and incorporating careful attention to texture, form, and atmosphere.
In addition to its conceptual focus, this project has contributed to the development of a professional illustration portfolio. The completed works serve as refined examples of narrative-driven imagery, supporting preparation for presentation at the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators annual winter conference in New York. Through this process, the project has strengthened both technical skills and the ability to translate personal subject matter into polished, portfolio-ready pieces.
