Exploring Video Game Music and Composition
Evan L. O'Day
Dr. Victor Marquez, Faculty Mentor
According to Winifred Phillips, award-winning composer and author of the book A Composer’s Guide to Game Music (Phillips, 2014), the game composer’s creative skillset must consist of a fundamental grasp of music theory, general experience as a composer, and knowledge of contemporary music. Over eight weeks last summer, I studied A Composer's Guide to Game Music (Phillips, 2014). Dr. Marquez and I chose this book because it focuses so deeply on understanding music’s various roles within games and the particular requirements of such an exciting and challenging profession, while also providing a practical guide for acquiring necessary entrepreneurial skills: finding employment, networking, and managing a freelance business. Finally, the author shares her experience with audio technology for an altogether well-rounded workbook. I used what I learned from the book to write my own original music with techniques specific to the game industry. I’d like to take these skills and incorporate them into all other areas of my musical toolbox
