Types of Mummies

Jaydin Hicks
Dr. Benjamin Batzer, Faculty Mentor

Mummies are important because they teach us how people used to live. A mummy is a dead body that is covered in skin and flesh. Mummies are usually preserved accidentally or on purpose. Most people are familiar with Egyptian mummies. These are mummies that were intentionally preserved according to beliefs. However, there are mummies all over the world. There are the bog mummies in Europe, which were preserved accidentally in mud. These are usually mummies that died violently. Then there are the frozen mummies, such as Ötzi the Iceman. These are important in that they teach us what people ate and how people lived. There are also the mummies of sailors, such as John Torrington. Mummies are important in that they teach us many things.
