Prediction of One-Repetition Maximum Bench Press in Trained and Untrained College Women

Repetition predictions equations to estimate one-repetition maximum (1RM) bench press have rarely been developed on women. The purpose of this study was to assess popular repetition prediction equations to accurately estimate 1RM bench press in trained and untrained college women. Trained (TR, n = 85) and untrained (UT, n = 89) women were measured for 1RM and maximum repetitions-to-fatigue (RTF) on separate days. In UT women, the Brzycki (33.6±8.4 kg), Epley (31.5±6.9 kg), and Welday (31.6±6.9 kg) equations produced predicted 1RM values that were significantly greater than actual 1RM values (29.7±6.0 kg). In TR women, the Brzycki (37.5±9.8 kg) produced a significantly higher values than the actual 1RM (35.1±8.3 kg), while the Epley (36.7±8.6 kg), and Welday (36.7±8.5 kg) equations produced nonsignificant different values from actual 1RM values (35.5±8.6 kg). These findings suggest that different equations are necessary for predicting 1RM bench press in untrained women than in TR women.
