Globalization and its Impact: Melting Taiga's and Eroding Coastlines

Jeffery Sachs’ theory of global risks of development outlines the idea that modern day crises, such as climate change, can be linked to globalization and the increased burning of fossil fuels. Globalization can loosely be understood as how people, institutions, governments, technology, and environments interact with each other worldwide. However, globalization's effect on different communities is not always positive. Through content analysis, we have found that the coastlines of Hawai’i and the taigas of Siberia have been negatively impacted through tourism and industrialization. By analyzing environmental and geographical data we find that increased globalization in these areas have led to the degradation of the environment and traditions. Findings suggest that the increased tourism in Hawai’i has contributed to destruction of the coastlines and the oil industrialization in Siberia has led to melting of the taiga and reindeer sickness.
