A Randomized Control Trial Examining the Effects of Structured Flute-Playing Exercises and Short Physical Workouts on Perceived Breath Bontrol as well as Physical Exertion and Muscular Soreness in College-Level Marching Flutists
This randomized controlled trial examined whether structured flute-playing exercises and brief physical workouts improved lung capacity, perceived breath control, and physical exertion in college marching flutists. Testing using a phonatory aerodynamic system and self-report measures tracked changes across a marching season to inform strategies that support healthier, more effective performance. The project was grounded in the hypothesis that the intervention group would demonstrate measurable gains in vital capacity along with improved subjective breath control and reduced exertion and soreness across the season. Establishing a relationship between PAS-measured respiratory improvements and post-practice perception ratings could offer valuable clinical and educational implications.
