The Teachability of Socioemotional Learning in Classrooms

Reagan N. Murrish
Dr. Jill Arnold, Faculty Mentor

Since the COVID-19 Pandemic, professionals have become concerned with the lack of social skills in the new generation of students. Research has shown that these students display an alarming number of deficiencies in social awareness and competency (Bowman, 2023). The issue has caught the attention of professionals in the fields of education and psychology, who question if the implementation of socioemotional learning (SEL) curriculum may be the answer to the growing problem. SEL focuses on the development of many skills including self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision making, and relationship skills (CASEL). While professionals tend to be in agreement on the necessity of SEL (Elias, 2006), there is also skepticism on the teachability of socioemotional learning in elementary school classrooms. This research review will explain the fundamentals of SEL while utilizing theories from the fields of education and psychology to confirm the teachability of SEL in elementary school classrooms.
