Psychological Readiness of Return to Play
Athletes who return to play before being psychologically ready may be at a higher risk for reinjury. This study assessed the psychological readiness to return to play after an injury in college athletes at various stages of rehabilitation. Twenty current student-athletes (N=10 males, N=10 females) in various stages of rehabilitation from a sports injury completed a mixed-methods survey including the ACL-RSI, demographic data, and confidence levels. Athletes who have high confidence in their rehabilitation program tend to be more confident (80%) in returning to play. Females feel more frustrated (60%) about their rehabilitation program. Eighty percent feel positive about the prospect of returning to play. Data indicates that rehabilitation confidence is important in returning to play from an injury.
