Thinking Green: Exploring the Nuances of Culture and Sustainability

In a world with limited resources, a changing climate, and rampaging mass production, discussions of environmental sustainability have begun to play a significant role in society. Eco-friendly practices on both an individual and industrial scale are being emphasized as promising solutions to problems threatening the environment. These solutions seek to preserve the planet by reducing waste production, carbon emissions, and by opting to use renewable sources for energy and materials.
This project investigates how Truman students engage with ideas of sustainability by assessing environmentally-oriented habits, opinions and activism. It also explores how dimensions of personality, such as generosity and religiosity, correlate to sustainability literacy. We predict that people who have higher levels of sustainability literacy will also have higher levels of generosity as well as a stronger religious identity. This information will be used to develop environmental campaigns tailored to the student body.
