Johanna Senfter: Life and Composition Through the Clarinet

Harper R. Golden♦
Dr. Jesse D. Krebs, Faculty Mentor

Johanna Senfter was a German composer of the late 19th and early 20th century. Described for her modest and introverted nature, many of her pieces have fallen into obscurity, though she composed a great number of works, including nine symphonies, collections for solo piano, and an array of chamber string arrangements. The clarinet is the only wind instrument, however, to be featured in her compositions, appearing in a trio, quintet, as well as a sonata with piano. This presentation will provide an overview of Senfter's life and major works, with increased attention on her compositions featuring the clarinet. Additionally, excerpts of Senfter's clarinet sonata will be performed live to demonstrate characteristics of her compositional style.
