Collaboration in Composition: A Comissioned Work For Saxophone-Piano

Carson J. Merical
Dr. Victor Marquez, Faculty Mentor

Music thrives off of collaboration— bringing both composers and performers together to create something meaningful and unique. I received a commission from a Quincy University student to write a saxophone-piano piece with them that they would perform at a conference. This presentation will explore the process of writing and collaborating to create this piece. From the drawing board to the final piece, I will discuss how the communication between the performer and I shaped the piece in technical, artistic, and accessible ways. In doing this project, I learned first hand the dynamic relationship between the composer and performer, and how this collaboration synergizes to create something that can be shared to both an audience as well as other musicians. This presentation shows how collaboration is essential in creating sustainable music that is engaging, performable, and enjoyable for the audience and the performer.
