Uncovering Fanny Hensel’s Choral Works: A Critical Analysis and Call for Recognition

As a renowned Romantic composer and pianist, Fanny Hensel wrote nearly 100 choral works, some of which graced her salon gatherings known as Sonntagsmusiken. While scholars and performers have increasingly focused on her songs and piano works, Hensel’s choral music has lingered in the shadows, receiving scant attention and fewer performances. By delving into current scholarship, musical scores, and recordings, this paper examines three of Hensel’s choral works to highlight the importance of her choral music as well as her distinctive style: Nachtreigen (1829), the Hiob Cantata (1831), and Gartenlieder (1847). As my analysis shows, these compositions not only showcase Hensel’s innovative style but also represent the height of Romanticism in music. Through this study, it becomes evident that Hensel’s choral works merit greater exposure and appreciation.
