Effect of Alignment Pattern on Golf Ball on Shot Placement in Field of Play

James C. McClure
Dr. Jerry Mayhew, Faculty Mentor

Golf is excellent recreational sport and engaged in by millions of participants.  Many players are interested in the best equipment to make their game better.  The purpose of this case study was to determine if a pattern applied to a golf ball influences its flight path and leads to better performance outcomes.  The flight pattern of three Callaway Chrome Soft golf balls with different factory-applied alignment patterns were evaluated using a hobby-grade launch monitor.  Balls were hit in an alternating pattern for a total of 135 shots.  Results indicated that the application of an alignment pattern on the ball resulted in a narrower deviation pattern, leading to better placement of the ball in the field of play.  Use of a specific golf ball could improve player performance and reduce the stroke total per round.
