More than Performers: How the Showgirls Dance Team Reflects the Marginalization of Women's Sports.
This presentation examines the history of the Truman State University Showgirls Dance Team and argues that the team’s experiences represent a broader national pattern of the marginalization of women’s sports. Utilizing both primary and secondary sources, the study analyzes the historical developments of the team as well as modern issues. The Showgirls Dance Team exemplifies the challenges faced by women athletes through the overall lack of media coverage, the absence of institutional and financial support, and the devaluation of the sport due to having to mask physical exertion. This presentation places the Showgirls within the broader context of gender inequality in the United States’ sports culture.
