Chloe E. Hughey* and Brianna R. DeBacker♦
Dr. Amy F. Teten, Faculty Mentor

Aphasia is a communication disorder that can significantly impact an individual’s ability to communicate, especially in emergency situations. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a need for specific training on aphasia for first responders. Data was collected from 42 participants from the Kirksville Fire Department, Kirksville Ambulance District, and Truman State University Department of Public Safety. The participants completed a pre-assessment before receiving a 25-minute training session on Aphasia. After the training, they completed a post-assessment to evaluate the effectiveness of the training. Results and implications will be presented.
