The Correlation Between the Socioeconomic Status of School Districts and Mental Health Interventions Within K-12 Classrooms
Mental illness in K -12 classrooms has begun to rise within the past years. Research shows allowing students and teachers access to resources and interventions can have positive outcomes on both student wellbeing and academic achievement. However, due to different socioeconomic factors, some school districts may not have the funding to provide adequate resources to students and staff. Through a literature review process, this study examines how varying socioeconomic statuses of school districts contribute to the amount of quality resources and intervention strategies that are available to students and staff. It also takes into account the amount of access families within these different socioeconomic groups have to counseling or resources outside of the school setting. Through gathering research, it will also be evaluated how Brofenbrenner’s ecological theory supports the given data.
