Combined Theatre and Forensics Programs
Combining speech and drama programs has been widely debated. To assess the success of combining programs, this study used publicly available data, such as award data and school program information, to determine if there was a correlation between the type of program and achievements. A review of the literature pertaining to competency theory was used to understand how intrinsic motivation might influence success in other areas of students' careers. Among the 27 schools examined, combined programs yielded 6 more state championships. In dramatic awards like the Blue Star and C.A.P.P.I.E.s, combined programs yielded an average of 4 more awards won. Based on the literature review, there is some support for the competency theory influencing students to want to be better at not just these activities, but also in their wider academic careers. Future studies should further investigate the benefits of combining these two programs.
