A Brief Analysis and Performance of the Music of Tom Cipullo
20th century Opera and Art Song was largely dominated by repertoire inspired by modernism. Schoenberg’s shift away from tonality and Stravinsky’s shift away from metrical rhythm helped to define this genre of music. The music of Tom Cipullo, born in 1956, is inspired by those who made the shift back to tonality and composed in the styles of neoclassicism and neoromanticism. The music of Tom Cipullo is tonal, but often stretches those boundaries. Today, he is one of the leading composers in contemporary opera and art song due to his extensive knowledge of how to write for voice. This presentation will discuss the compositional and expressive style of Cipullo’s music and will contain a short performance from a work by Cipullo.
