Elementary Flexible Seating Implementation Based on Grade Level

Karlee M. Phillips
Dr. Bridget Thomas and Dr. Sarah Mohler, Faculty Mentors

Around 2018, flexible seating caught the attention of many professionals in the field of education. Flexible seating in an elementary classroom can be intimidating for teachers who are not familiar with the proper implementation. Jenna Havig and Brooke Markle are two of the many teachers who discuss the implementation processes that have worked for them and their individual grades, but no guide on the best practices has been complied for every grade. For my capstone project I have compiled the best ways to introduce flexible seating to each grade at the elementary level from kindergarten through fifth grade. This list contains strategies and helpful tips that a multitude of teachers have recommended for each grade. Research-based techniques and best practices for each grade will allow educators to easily add flexible seating in their classroom.
