Farmers Are Super Heroes; Musings From Atop a Bicycle
Samantha L. Pounders
Dr. Monica Barron, Faculty Mentor
Cycling through the western coast of the United States this summer visiting small farms, I collected a series of interviews and observations on farmers, farming and the greening of food markets. My presentation for the Student Research Conference incorporates readings of personal essays and photographs visually explaining the farms I visited. My goal in these writings is to pollinate readers with the wisdom of experienced farmers, beginning farmers and travel spontaneity. All these stories are a composite of this larger piece, a quilt of ideas, from the hearts of land-based people. Using transportation as a form to fit the medium of sustainability, bicycling was an experience to impart all on its own. I plan on bringing my bicycle into the presentation, explaining the toils of traveling aside cars on the highway and encouraging others to consider traveling by bicycle.
