An Analysis and Performance of Tres Recuerdos, a Work for Unaccompanied Flute by Dr. Victor Marquez-Barrios

Tres Recuerdos is a work for unaccompanied flute by composer Dr. Victor Marquez-Barrios that encapsulates memories of specific musical experiences. While composing works based on memories is common for composers, the memories on which this work is based have aged, altered by the passage of time, yet are used in their modified, or remembered, form. This work presents several difficulties to the performer, employing various (difficult) extended techniques that accommodate the specific sounds the memories require, and demanding great expression and interpretational flair. However, being based on the composer's memories, and working with that composer to create a personal interpretation, proves even more challenging. Tres Recuerdos explores that challenge, acknowledging the frequent futility of the perfect preservation of a memory, studying how we interpret that memory, and how it can evolve. It adds one final layer to the process by letting each memory be further transformed by the performer's interpretation.
