Exploration of Microtubule Function in Mutant C. elegans

Mutants in the gene vab-9, which codes for an adhesion protein, and the gene sma-1, which codes for a spectrin protein, experience an elongation defect phenotype. It is suspected that the mechanism behind the phenotype of vab-9 and sma-1 mutants in C. elegans pertains to how the VAB-9 and SMA-1 affect microtubules during embryonic development. Whether or not microtubule function is altered by mutations in these genes will provide vital information for experiments going forward that further explore the function and mechanism of the proteins themselves.
