COVID-19 and Leadership: Why Some Countries Succeeded And Others Failed

Peyton M. Hornberger
Dr. Michael Rudy, Faculty Mentor

This research design is structured to measure the response of governments to COVID-19 in terms of leadership. COVID-19 has been a mobilizing and polarizing event in the course of our lives. Political science opens the door to explore the implications of governmental leadership in containing the coronavirus, in conjuction with health and economic factors. As such a design requires abundant time and resources, the study is yet to be conducted. However, this paper outlines the structure for a multivariate regression analysis, with the dependent variable being deaths for COVID-19 per capita and the independent variable, called “Government Initiative Index”, accounting for ten internal binary factors which add up to one main index variable to be calculated in the model. Some of the included variables are: mandatory masks, social distancing protocols, government provided tests, penalties for not following guidelines, and other political and economic factors.
