Samantha M. Murfin*, Lauren M. Dowdy, and Elizabeth D. Kroeger
Dr. Janet Gooch and Dr. Ilene Elmlinger, Faculty Mentors

Twelve parents of children who were seen for speech-language therapy in the Truman Speech and Hearing Clinic participated in this study. All participants watched the same DVD created by the researchers for the purpose of teaching parents how to enhance their childs early literacy skills. Six of the participants participated in a focus group after they watched the DVD and six did not. The purpose of the focus group was to review material presented in the DVD and answer any questions from the participants. Questionnaires were used to determine how much information the participants retained both immediately following the DVD presentation and three weeks later. Questionnaires also probed whether participating in the literacy program had any effect on the parents literacy practices at home. Results of the study revealed that participating in the focus group aided in retention and increasing knowledge.
