Ownership of Virtual Property:
The Case for New Protections

Technology is constantly progressing and it is important that the law keeps up. With the spread of the internet, people have begun investing time and money into virtual property, and the protections that came with it are yet unclear. This paper addresses how virtual property integrates into the existing legal framework by looking at two specific examples of virtual property, one of which resulted in a court case over the issue. It also discusses why virutal property is worthy of protection. The result of the work is that there is sufficient justification to extend to virtual property many of the same protections given to intellectual property.
