Film Authorship Journeys in the digital era

By analyzing the recent work of world filmmakers Peter Greenaway, Kevin MacDonald, and Ciro Guerra who have adapted digital technologies to their last productions, this paper focuses on the distinct notion of film authorship accomplished by these artists. Furthermore, the paper asks to what extent these directors recent productions establish a real rupture with pre-digital ways to produce cinema, significantly modifying the role of the author, and the way film authorship will be conceived in the future. The analysis of the three cases studied here suggests that the incorporation of digital platforms to audiovisual productions does not mean the end of traditional cinema, but an expansion of the creative possibilities and of the concept of authorship. This expansion is, however, limited; although new media and technology significantly influence the cinematic language and its ways of production, it is not conveying strictly a new direction in cinema.
